Mohave Valley Jr. High has been awarded a $1660 grant to cover half of the cost of a field trip to Phoenix to visit the state courts and capitol buildings this spring.
Dubbed Real World Civics, the proposed trip would take students currently examining the judicial system on a field trip to the state Supreme Court, Capitol, and Legislature, to see firsthand how or where Arizona creates and upholds our state laws. The goal is to take two of our classes, approximately 70 students, to Phoenix to see these in March. This will expand the students’ knowledge threefold: Through an increase of judicial knowledge learned through a firsthand experience that they will retain longer than reading about it in a textbook; possible careers in government that they would not have a chance to see in action otherwise, and; help them prepare for their high school civics test.
The BHHS Legacy grant will provide half of the anticipated cost for the 70 students: The school is looking to raise the remaining $1660 to make this trip a reality. Any assistance from local businesses, community service organizations, or even individual citizens would be greatly appreciated. Arizona tax payers can contribute through the Arizona School Tax Credit program, which allows taxpayers filing single to contribute up to $200, and those filing jointly up to $400 to local school districts AND received a dollar for dollar tax credit directly from Arizona.
